ETHOS

I have abdominal pain mainly in the upper abdomen.

Patient

Hi, I've been experiencing some health issues and need some advice.

Triage Assistant

Where does it hurt?

Patient

The pain is mainly in my upper abdomen.

Triage Assistant

Does the pain shoot anywhere else, like your chest or back?

Patient

Occasionally, it does feel like it's spreading to my back.

Triage Assistant

When did the pain begin?

Patient

It started a few days ago and has been getting gradually worse.

Triage Assistant

Is the pain constant, or does it come and go?

Patient

It's not constant. It comes and goes, but when it comes, it can be quite intense.

Triage Assistant

How bad is the pain on a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is mild (doesn't interfere with activities) and 10 is severe (excruciating, unable to do any activities)?

Patient

When it's at its worst, I'd say it's about an 8.

Triage Assistant

You should go to the Emergency Department now because severe abdominal pain that comes and goes but reaches an 8 on the pain scale can indicate a serious condition. In the meantime, lie down and rest. You can try sipping clear fluids and avoid any heavy, greasy, or caffeinated foods. Avoid taking aspirin or NSAIDs like ibuprofen as they can irritate your stomach. Thank you for calling, goodbye.
